Recurring Weekly Deadlines

All posts should be submitted to the CUNY Commons site unless otherwise specified:

    • Tuesdays by midnight: personal journal entries (private or public)
    • Thursdays by midnight: group project updates (public)

Hybrid Schedule

Half of our meetings will take place in-person and half online:

    • We will meet in person at the beginning (2/2, 2/9, 2/16, 2/23) and end (4/27, 5/4, 5/11) of the semester.
    • We will meet online during the middle (3/2, 3/9, 3, 16, 3/23, 3/30, 4/6, 4/13) of the semester.

Week 1 | Wednesday, February 2 (in person)

In class: Welcome, introductions, syllabus and logistics, role definitions, potential project discussions, possible presentation from GC Digital Fellows.

Week 2 | Wednesday, February 9 (in person)

Due:

  • If pitching, post draft project proposals by midnight on Sunday, February 6 (= public post; category: Project Proposals)
  • If not pitching, leave constructive feedback as comments on several of the proposals by Tuesday, February 8.
  • Expertise share post (public post; category: Skillsets) by Tuesday, February 8. For examples of past skillset posts, see here, here and here.
  • Attend at least one NYCDH Week virtual event from 2/7-2/11 (kickoff day: Monday, February 7, with keynote roundtable on “Finding, Cultivating, and Sustaining Support for Your DH Project.” Register here).

In class: Elevator pitches, decision day, group formation, group roles and collaborator agreement. By the end of this class period, you should have a list of group members, responsibilities, and an agreement for modes of communication and meeting deadlines.

  • Revised project proposals due by Thursday, 2/17 (= public group post; category: Project Proposals). For guidance, see here and here.

In class: Collaborative group work revising project proposals, assessment of project management resources.

Week 4 | Wednesday, February 23 (guest lecture by Dr. Lisa Rhody) (in person)

Due:

  • Personal journal entries due Tuesday, 2/22 (= private or public individual post; category: Personal Blog)
  • Project Work Plans due Thursday, 2/24 (= public group post; category: Group Project Updates)

In class: Dr. Lisa Rhody class visit, group meetings: identifying existing resources and project needs. Create actionable steps to fill project gaps.

This week: schedule consultation meetings with Digital Fellows; consider reaching out to outside advisor(s)

Week 5 | Wednesday, March 2 (guest lecture by Steve Zweibel) (online)

Due:

  • Personal bios and contribution statements by Tuesday, 3/1. In 1-2 paragraphs answer questions such as who are you? what is your academic and professional background? what are your research interests? what are your responsibilities on your project?  (= public individual post; category: Personal Blog)
  • Group data management plans by Thursday, 3/3 (= public group post; category: Group Project Updates)

In class:  Guest lecture on data management by Steve Zweibel, GC Data and Digital Projects Librarian. Group meeting to discuss data management plans, storage, and sharing practices.

  • Personal journal entries reflecting on how data management can improve your research practices by Tuesday, 3/8 (=  private or public individual post; category: Personal Blog).

In class: Project presentations discussing data management plans, collaborative group work focusing on outreach and social media plans.

Week 11 | Wednesday, April 13 (online)

Due: Personal journal entries (4/12) + Group project updates (4/14). Project updates: Are you hitting your milestones? Why or why not? What adjustments have you made as we enter the final stretch? How will your group manage the upcoming hiatus over spring break?

In class: Project presentations (choose a standard background design for slides, 5-minute talks), collaborative project work and consultation.

Week 12 | Wednesday, April 20

Spring Break.

Week 13 | Wednesday, April 27 (guest lecture by Stephen Klein) (in person)

Due: Personal journal entries (4/26) + Group project updates (4/28).

In class: T minus one week! Guest lecture by Stephen Klein on web archiving, collaborative project work and consultation.

Week 14 | Wednesday, May 4 (in person online)

Due: Personal journal entries (5/3). No group project updates this week.

In class: Project launch dress rehearsal. Rafael Portela (History) and Zachary Lloyd (Comp Lit) will visit class to offer external feedback.

Week 15 | Wednesday, May 11 (tentatively in person online)

Public project launch at the GC Digital Showcase. Register to attend here.

Week 16 | Wednesday, May 18

Due:

  • Post final group project reports as public posts to Commons blog.
  • Email individual reflection papers to instructor.
